THE SATURNALS

Coinciding with the end of agricultural work, peasants and slaves celebrated the Saturnal feasts in honor of the god Saturn, with which old Rome welcomed winter. In these festivities, the Romans decorated their houses with plants and lights; they enjoyed great banquets and exchanged gifts.

The Saturnalia ended with the celebration of the "Natalis Solis Invicti". "Natalis Solis Invicti"coinciding with December 25, in which a new sun was welcomed to conquer the darkness.

The syncretism will allow a new solar deity, arising in a corner of the confines of the empire, to inherit this secular tradition.

In the 4th century, Pope Julius I fixed Christmas Day on December 25. This date was considered as a new rebirth of the cycle of life, with the purpose of pacifying the confrontations between the pagans and the Romans converted to Christianity.
